Saathis and Jeevansaathis of AID

Saathi -A word in Hindi, which means a companion, a friend or a fellow traveler. As AID's involvement and interaction with NGO's in India both deepened and widened, AID recognized individuals who had dedicated themselves completely toward bringing about fundamental changes in Indian society, no matter how distant or ambitious they sounded when we consider the magnitude, that is India. These people had the courage to start, in their own small way, and to believe that they could make a difference. In recognition of their extraordinary dedication AID instituted the Saathi program reflection of the fact that they were are our companions, in our search for an equitable, just and sustainable development. What is AID?

AID was founded in 1991 at UMD College Park by 5 graduate students who wanted to start acting on India’s problems. It now has around 30 chapters in the USA, Australia, India, and Germany with around 300 volunteers! All the chapters are independent of each other and we strive to have no hierarchy within individual chapters. AID volunteers cover every part of the political, ideological and religious spectrum and are from within and outside India! We are students, professionals, homemakers and retirees!
